This silent horror film classic directed by Robert Wiene with screenplay by Hans Janowitz and Carl Mayer, is one of the most influential of German Expressionist films and often considered one of the greatest horror movies of the silent era. It is notable for having introduced the ‘twist ending’ in cinema and for its weird and distorted set design. Our hero Francis grapples with the deranged Dr. Caligari in a world, which is not quite what it seems.
Ashley’s new score introduces new themes and will also be partly improvised, created by an intimate and responsive engagement to the film where the on-screen action, mood and aesthetics will determine the evolving shape of the score. It brings together a wide variety of stylistic influences from the virtuosity of the classical tradition, explorations in jazz and experimental contemporary techniques, resulting in a colourful sonic landscape of musical symbolism inspired by film’s unfolding story.
